Wendell Beavers and Erika Berland, pioneers in the fields of somatic education and experimental performance and training will be in residence Jan 3—March 31 as part of (or to initiate?) the 2021 11 Jane Street art: Incubated Performance Research Series.
“We expect to generate and document a series of short movement pieces based on experiential anatomy, explorations of perception, and the nature of mind. We are working in response and in the midst of racial injustice, genocidal culture, climate destruction and a corruption of spirit.
We choose to dance”
The residency, in collaboration with SomaticPerformer LLC, also includes a series of online classes taught by Wendell and Erika, exploring somatic process as creative source for artists engaged in any medium. More info on on-line classes TBA
Wendell Beavers and Erika Berland, founding faculty of Naropa University’s MFA Theater: Contemporary Performance Program 2004-2019, have been investigating, together and separately, the intersection of Buddhism, the somatic research of the west–specifically Body Mind Centering® and the work of its founder Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen–experimental theater and post-modern dance forms since the 1970s.
